We’ve handed our access card to a colleague so they can buzz themselves in after forgetting theirs at home — or we’ve been the one left stranded at the door. These everyday scenarios expose the vulnerabilities of legacy access control systems and how easily they can be exploited.
A move towards biometric-based access control helps address those vulnerabilities, and enterprises recognize that. Demand across the Middle East and Africa (MEA) is being driven by both the public and private sectors adopting advanced security infrastructure, resulting in the deployment of multi-layered authentication methods such as iris scanning, fingerprint verification, and facial recognition.[1]
Like any security technology, biometric access control is shaped by technological and regulatory dynamics, prompting important questions around data privacy and system management. But understanding what the technology is and how it works is the first step toward responsible, calculated deployment—one that unlocks new enterprise efficiencies and injects intelligence into this vital component of physical security.
Enterprise security and efficiency: Important traits to have
The value proposition of biometric-based security is simple: identity verification using physical human traits. The process is just as straightforward. A sensor captures data, converts it into an encrypted template, then stores it and compares it against future input when access is requested.[2] In other words: verify identity, confirm permission, grant access.
As access control has evolved as a security procedure, so too have the types of systems deployed by enterprises in the Middle East and around the world. Fingerprint recognition remains one of the most established technologies, while facial recognition has made significant gains thanks to advancements in video analytics and accurate data capture. Iris scanning offers the highest reliability of all, being the most stable biometric trait humans have — though the hardware remains expensive to deploy.
Leveraging physical traits translates into immediate benefits from both a security and efficiency perspective. It reduces the potential for identity fraud, which can extend into other workflows such as HR and payroll. It is also highly convenient for personnel, who no longer need to carry a separate form of identification such as cards or badges. With each access event, system operators retain the information needed to create a full, auditable log—essential for enterprises that must demonstrate compliance with relevant industry regulations.
Data handling and room for error
Biometric access control is subject to the same data privacy considerations as other security technologies, such as network video, and therefore falls under the same regulations. Case in point: Saudi Arabia’s Personal Data Protection Law (PDPL) sets out strict rules for organizations gathering, storing and handling personal data, including biometrics.[3] Guided by the principles of purpose limitation and data minimization, and to reduce the potential for incidents, enterprises should collect only the data necessary to achieve a specific objective—in this case, identity verification. It is also why modern systems do not store raw fingerprint, iris or facial data, and instead rely on encrypted biometric templates.
System accuracy is equally consequential to the reliability of biometric access control. Operators can track how often users are wrongly granted or denied access using two key measurements: the false acceptance rate (FAR), which reflects an unauthorized person being incorrectly accepted, and the false rejection rate (FRR), which reflects an authorized person being incorrectly turned away. There is always room for error with any security system, but operators can minimize risk by scrutinizing these accuracy figures during procurement and installation, and by confirming their systems meet requirements at organizational scale.
Accessing value, growth and resilience
A major part of owning and running a modern network security system is factoring in the full ownership cycle and its total cost. Biometric access control systems are a strong example of this in practice: high upfront costs are offset by ongoing savings.
