Over 28 million user records exposed

The Facebook of Latin America was hacked to expose the database of over 28 million users. social networking site, and on September 4th, data breach notification company, LeakBase disclosed the hack and also informed The Hacker News about the hack of Taringa’s database containing details on 28,722,877 accounts that includes usernames, email addresses and hashed user passwords. The passwords were reportedly encrypted with MD5, an algorithm that is long known to be vulnerable to such attacks.

The social networking site, subsequently issued an statement about the incident in Spanish confirming the hack but also clarified that the leaked database doesn’t contain users’ phone numbers, Bitcoin wallet addresses, or access credentials for other social networking platforms. It also seeks to reassure members that Taringa! is actively looking for additional indicators of compromise.
